Jack Bousfield founded Jack's Camp in the 1960s on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the largest salt-pan systems on earth, and his son Ralph later gave it the 1940s safari style for which it became known. Natural Selection rebuilt the camp entirely and reopened it in 2021, keeping that spirit and bringing the comfort fully up to date. There are just nine tents, each of around 270 square metres, with indoor and outdoor showers and a plunge pool on the veranda. Above all, guests spend time with the Zu/'hoasi San, among the oldest living cultures in southern Africa, whose guides lead walks through the surrounding country and share their traditions of hunting, gathering and rock art. The pans also host one of the great wildlife events of the region: from November to March, as the rains arrive, zebra and wildebeest gather in their tens of thousands. In the dry months quad bikes head out across the salt itself, where the horizon dissolves into white. There is also time to spend with a group of habituated meerkats. The camp is open all year.

Insider tip Give a morning to walking with the Zu/'hoasi San guides, who show how they hunt, forage and read the land.

Why I choose it A camp built around the people of the Kalahari as much as its wildlife, with the zebra migration in the green season and the bare salt pans in the dry.
