Il San Corrado di Noto is a former masseria, a fortified farmhouse that once belonged to Prince Nicolaci, set among old citrus and olive groves in the Val di Noto, not far from the southern tip of Sicily. The restoration keeps its regal air, from the ornamental gates to the ivory stone walls, and two large pools ringed with palms anchor the grounds. The 31 suites are in low buildings, each with a generous private patio, hardwood floors, a four-poster bed and a bathroom in travertine; two of them have their own pools. Eight villas go further, each with a private pool and a patio of more than 250 square metres. Il Principe di Belludia is the main restaurant, an osteria and bar handle lunch and an aperitivo by the pool, and a Sicilian breakfast can be brought to your room. A spa, tennis, a yoga pavilion and free bicycles fill the days at home. From June to September a shuttle runs about 15 minutes to the hotel's private beach club. The Baroque centre of Noto, UNESCO-listed, is a few miles away.

Insider tip Between June and September, take the free shuttle to the hotel's private beach club for a stretch of sand to yourselves and a long view down the coast.
Why I choose it Space and privacy are hard to find in Sicily's south-east, and here a family can have a villa with its own pool while staying close to Noto and the sea.
