Four Seasons Resort Langkawi

  • Two Keys
A small island in the ocean off Langkawi, seen from the air.

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi lies on Jalan Tanjung Rhu, between a mile-long sandy beach and towering limestone cliffs, inside the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark. Langkawi is an archipelago of about 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, and close by is the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, a maze of cliffs some 550 million years old. The resort's 90 or so pavilions and villas mix contemporary design with Malaysian textures and materials, and some face straight onto the beach. The villas all have private pools, from Beach Villas to two-bedroom and three-bedroom family and Imperial beach villas, and a number of rooms have outdoor soaking tubs or open-air showers. The main pool is about the size of a hockey rink. The Geo Spa is large, built in a style that recalls Malaysia's Arabian heritage, and offers holistic treatments and a ritual for couples. Restaurants cover Indian, Italian and Japanese cooking, with HAVA serving food from north-eastern India and meals in the open air, and the Lesung Batu Cooking School teaches three-hour classes. The MICHELIN Guide gives the resort Two Keys, and it has programmes for families during school holidays.

Rooms
About 90 pavilions and villas (the MICHELIN Guide lists 92)

Insider tip The Lesung Batu Cooking School runs three-hour classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so plan a class for one of those days.

Why I choose it A beach resort beneath limestone cliffs in Langkawi's geopark, with pool villas, a large spa and a cooking school.
