Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An, Vietnam

  • Best time: Feb to Aug
Wooden boats moored on a river in front of a row of old yellow shophouses.

The Nam Hai lines a kilometre of Ha My Beach on Vietnam's central coast, a short drive from Hoi An. Its 35 hectares are shaded by some 4,500 palms and laid out on phong thuy, the Vietnamese practice of feng shui. The 100 villas, designed by the Paris architect Reda Amalou, are walled for privacy and range from one to five bedrooms. Many have their own pools, and all have indoor and outdoor living space and garden showers; the three-bedroom pool villas have recently been redesigned. Three tiers of infinity pools step down towards the sea. There are two restaurants and two bars, a cooking academy with its own herb and vegetable farm, and the Heart of the Earth Spa, whose treatments include sound therapy with quartz bowls. Tennis, water sports and a kids' club keep families busy, and a villa of four or five bedrooms suits a reunion or a wedding party. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites are within reach for day trips: the old town of Hoi An, My Son and the citadel at Hue.

Insider tip Give a full day each to the UNESCO sites at Hue and My Son, and keep an afternoon free for the Heart of the Earth Spa.

Why I choose it A beach resort with real room for families, from one-bedroom villas to five, and Hoi An close enough for an evening in the old town.
