The turf-roofed farm buildings in a green valley beneath steep mountains.

Eleven Experience took a 15th-century sheep farm in the Fljót valley, on the Troll Peninsula of northern Iceland, and turned it into a lodge built around the landscape in every season. There are 13 rooms, 10 king, two queen and a bunkroom, which keeps the scale close to a private house. The social heart of the place is a geothermally heated indoor-outdoor pool with a swim-up bar, joined by hot tubs for evenings under the northern sky. In late winter and spring Deplar is a heli-skiing base, with the peaks of the peninsula running down to the sea; the 2027 heli-ski season runs from February 28 to June 5. From October to February the long nights bring the chance of the Northern Lights. In summer the midnight sun turns the valley green, and days go to fly-fishing, hiking and riding Icelandic horses. Eleven's own guides run the programme in every season, so the lodge is as good a choice in July as in March. The drive from Akureyri takes around 90 minutes to two hours, along one of the most dramatic stretches of coast in the country.

Insider tip Choose the season by what you want to do: midnight-sun summers for fishing and riding, the dark months for the Northern Lights, spring for heli-skiing.

Why I choose it A remote farm lodge with its own guides, which makes northern Iceland work in winter, spring and summer alike.
