Elva is a design hotel at Skulestadmo, just outside Voss in western Norway, set beside Lundarvatnet lake with mountains on every side. It is made up of a main building and five mini-houses, each named after a local river, all built from local materials and placed so that they sit quietly in the landscape and look out over the water. There are 14 places to stay in all: four bedrooms in the main building and the rest in the small houses. The architecture has won awards, including the jury prize for hotel building of the year at the Archello Awards in 2024. Food is taken seriously. Elva Restaurant cooks with ingredients from the Voss region, and Elvatun Café and Bar is the place for a lighter meal or a drink. After a day in the mountains, guests can use the sauna and the private hot tubs. The hotel is aimed at people who like to be outdoors, and the valley offers walking, cycling and water sports in summer and snow in winter. Dogs are welcome.

Insider tip Book one of the five mini-houses rather than a main-building room for the most private view of the lake.
Why I choose it It is a small, beautifully made hotel in a fjord-country valley, a good stop between Bergen and the fjords for travellers who want quiet and good food.
