Chablé Yucatán is a wellness resort in the jungle at Chocholá, about 26 kilometres from Mérida on the road towards Campeche. It is built around a restored 19th-century hacienda, near the Chicxulub crater, where an asteroid struck some 65 million years ago. There is no surface water in this landscape, only clear water underground, and the spa is built around a cenote, a natural swimming hole sacred to the ancient Maya. There are 40 casitas set into the jungle, designed by the Mexican interior designer Paulina Morán with local materials, and two large private villas, one of them the old hacienda house with its own spa suite, gym and butler's kitchen. Three restaurants cook with organic, seasonal ingredients, many from the resort's own Maya gardens. Wellness is the focus, with programmes shaped for each guest that draw on yoga, meditation, cycling and Maya healing traditions. The surrounding jungle is home to the largest population of deer in Yucatán.
