Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam has had many lives: a fifteenth-century convent, royal lodgings, the headquarters of the Admiralty and, until 1988, Amsterdam's City Hall, whose Wedding Chamber, created in 1925 by Chris Lebeau, keeps its Amsterdam School stained glass. It became the first Sofitel Legend in Europe in 2011 and stands between the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal canals. For a listed building, its environmental record is remarkable. A thermal energy storage well 130 metres deep works with a heat pump, heat recovery and listed-building double glazing, and the hotel holds Green Key Gold, EarthCheck Silver and an EHMA sustainability award. Two beehives of around 30,000 bees and a vegetable and herb garden supply the kitchens; coffee grounds are used to grow mushrooms, surplus food goes through Too Good To Go, and the hotel supports a food bank and a homeless shelter. There are 178 rooms and suites, Bridges restaurant, the Oriole Garden Bistro and a spa with a heated indoor pool, and the hotel appears in the MICHELIN Guide.
