A sandy bay and turquoise water below a green headland.

Sheen Falls Lodge sits where the Sheen River tumbles into Kenmare Bay, a few minutes' drive from the town of Kenmare. It was once the summer house of the Marquis of Lansdowne, and its 300-acre estate of woodland and parkland still feels like a sporting retreat. There are 72 rooms and suites, most looking over the falls, the bay or the gardens, plus five cottages and villas on the estate for families who want more room. The Falls restaurant is set right above the waterfall, so every table has a view, and the wine cellar is among the largest in Ireland. The Stables Brasserie and Nua Vista offer simpler meals. Easanna Spa has an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and gym. Outdoors, the choice is wide: salmon fishing on the river, falconry, horse riding, clay shooting, archery, tennis and heritage walks, and the Ring of Kerry Golf Club nearby, with a shuttle from the lodge. The Ring of Kerry, the Beara Peninsula and the Wild Atlantic Way all start close by. The lodge is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Insider tip Ask for a table by the window in The Falls restaurant, which sits directly above the waterfall.

Why I choose it Country-house comfort in the wildest corner of Kerry, with fishing and falconry on the estate. It is our base for the Ring of Kerry and Beara.
