Royal Malewane is The Royal Portfolio's safari property in the Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, part of the unfenced wilderness of the Greater Kruger. It is owned by Liz Biden, who turned the original Biden family bush home into the six-bedroom Africa House. It now runs to four lodges. Malewane Lodge, the original, has six Luxury Suites and two Royal Suites raised on decks above the bushveld; Waterside is colourful and made for families; the contemporary Farmstead has three Luxury Farm Suites; and Masiya's Camp has six tented suites with heated plunge pools, named for the master tracker Wilson Masiya. Waterside House and the Farmhouse join Africa House as sole-use villas with their own vehicles and staff. The guiding team, all holding the highest FGASA qualifications, has earned the place the nickname 'Harvard of the Bush', and a Conservation and Research Centre opens that work to guests. The Royal Waters Spa has three treatment rooms and a hammam. All meals, house wines and lantern-lit bush dinners under the night sky are included. There are 24 suites and three private villas, and Royal Malewane holds Three MICHELIN Keys.

Insider tip Families should choose Waterside, the most family-minded of the four lodges, with a very good club for children.
Why I choose it The benchmark for guiding in the Greater Kruger, with a lodge to suit every kind of party.
