Linkwasha Camp

  • Best time: December to March for calving and predators; June to November for the dry season at the waterholes

Linkwasha Camp, run by Wilderness, lies in the south-eastern part of Hwange National Park, on the edge of the Ngamo Plains, and its guests also have the use of the adjoining Makalolo Private Wilderness Reserve of about 34,000 hectares. It has nine spacious tented suites, with a family room among them, a swimming pool for the heat of the day and a sunken hide beside the waterhole. Days follow game drives, and guests can spend a night out on the Star Bed under the open sky. A conservation experience with a nearby community is part of the stay, and the waterhole is streamed live on Africam. Meals are part of the fully inclusive rate, cooked fresh and to any dietary need, with traditional menu nights of sadza, braised meat and Amarula chocolate mousse; premium imported drinks and champagne are charged as extras. Linkwasha is reached by Wilderness Air from Victoria Falls Airport, a flight of roughly an hour to the airstrip. Wilderness names December to March as the best time, with plenty of wildlife, calving antelope and strong predator activity; April and May bring warm, moderate weather as the green season turns dry; and June to November is the dry season, when large numbers of animals gather at the waterholes and visibility is at its best.
