Lion Camp

  • Best time: May to October, the dry season and the camp's operating months

Lion Camp lies in the remote northern reaches of South Luangwa National Park, the valley where walking safaris began, close to one of the last water sources of the dry season. The camp has ten thatch-and-canvas suites raised on wooden walkways, in Luxury, Deluxe and Family categories, each with views over the floodplains and a private deck; the Family Suites share a lounge. A refurbishment in 2017 brought new design and amenities and the elevated walkways that link the main lodge to the suites. The main area has a dining deck, a lounge and bar, an infinity pool, a fire pit, a gym, a gift shop, wifi and a hide for watching game at the camp itself. Guided walking safaris, game drives and photographic safaris go out from May to October, when lion, leopard, wild dog and big herds of elephant and buffalo are seen alongside the valley's own Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra, with more than 400 species of birds. May and June are cooler and greener; September and October are hotter and often the most productive for game. The camp employs people from the Mkasanga and Mfuwe area and supports the Mkasanga Hope Foundation.
