Laragai House

The drawing room, its doors open onto a terrace and the plains beyond.

Laragai House is a family home on the 32,000-acre Borana Conservancy in Laikipia, taken by one group at a time and run by a long-serving resident team. It has 10 en suite bedrooms, and the shared rooms run from a drawing room, bar and dining room to a pool house, TV room and games room with table tennis, darts and croquet. There is an infinity pool, a gym, a tennis court, an on-site masseuse and a private airstrip. The conservancy works alongside Lewa and holds a wide range of large mammals, from elephant, black rhino, lion and leopard to Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and Jackson's hartebeest, with more than 350 bird species. Game viewing happens on day and night drives, on foot, on horseback from the conservancy's stables, with one ride included for each guest, and from the house itself, where elephants visit a nearby waterhole. Guests can join the rangers at dawn to track rhino on foot, ride mountain bikes with a guide or take a helicopter north over mountains, desert and volcanic lakes. A day at the Ngare Ndare Forest, with its canopy walkway and spring-fed pools, makes an easy outing.

Insider tip Join the rangers for an early-morning rhino tracking walk; the team identifies every rhino on Borana each day, and guests can go out with them.

Why I choose it It gives a large family or group a fully staffed house with an airstrip and Borana's rhino work on the doorstep.
