Capella Hanoi

A white Art Deco hotel building with gilded balconies on a tree-lined street corner.

Capella Hanoi stands a few steps from the Hanoi Opera House, between the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, and Bill Bensley conceived it as a tribute to the opera, imagining the inn where singers, composers and costume designers might have gathered after the final curtain in the jazz age. The building was entirely transformed rather than restored, and its rooms and suites are individually designed and dressed with theatrical memorabilia from that period; all have wrought-iron balconies, and the Opera Suites have the most atmosphere. For a hotel of its intimate scale, Capella Hanoi offers a remarkably rich range of places to eat. In the basement, Hibana by Koki, awarded a Michelin star, serves teppanyaki by chef Hiroshi Yamaguchi at an intimate 14-seat counter. Koki is given to the art of Japanese cooking, and Backstage celebrates Vietnamese flavours alongside international favourites. At Diva's Lounge, cocktails are paired with tapas, and The Hudson Rooms, known for its oysters, caviar and whisky, ranked No. 46 on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026. The Auriga Spa offers its signature moon ritual, La Grotta is an elegant indoor pool, and the Capella Culturists give guests a closer connection with Hanoi, its heritage, cultural traditions and hidden stories.

Insider tip Let the team arrange early tai chi beside Hoan Kiem Lake, or a private visit to Vietnam's first gin distillery.

Why I choose it A Bensley opera-house fantasy by the Old Quarter, with a Michelin-starred counter and a team that knows the city well.
