Black lava sea cliffs and surf on the coast of Lanai.

Four Seasons Resort Lanai opened in 1991 as The Manele Bay Hotel, the year of Lanai's last pineapple harvest. It became a Four Seasons in 2005 and was transformed again by 2016, after Larry Ellison bought almost all of the island in 2012. It stands on 35 acres above Hulopoe Beach, on an island without a single traffic light. In 2023 it became the first resort to earn Gold Certification from the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council's Reef Friendly Landscaping Program: its 12 acres of gardens are planted with native, low-water Hawaiian species and managed organically, and green waste is composted on site. In January 2025 it became the first Hawaiian resort of its class to achieve EarthCheck certification, after a 12-month audit. Single-use bath packaging and in-room dining plastics have gone. Guests receive free mineral reef-safe sunscreen and can join the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology in reef research at Hulopoe Beach. There are 213 rooms and suites, the Hawanawana Spa, the Jack Nicklaus Manele Golf Course and Nobu Lanai, and the south-coast setting has good weather all year. The resort holds One MICHELIN Key.

Insider tip Spend a morning with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology's reef research team at Hulopoe Beach, wearing the reef-safe sunscreen the resort provides.

Why I choose it Hawaii's first EarthCheck-certified resort of its class, on a reef it works hard to look after.
