The Surf Club opened on New Year's Eve in 1930 and was the place Miami society came to dance and swim for decades. It stands in Surfside, a few miles north of Miami Beach, and the original clubhouse is now joined by modern buildings holding residences and the Four Seasons hotel. The mood is private and calm rather than social, more hideaway than scene. Rooms are bright and open to the Atlantic, from bungalows and oceanfront rooms to suites, and the Marybelle Penthouse Suite has a pool on its own roof. Daytime cabanas line the historic Cabana Row, there are several pools, and the beach is right in front. The spa looks after the rest. Lido Restaurant cooks Italian food by the water, the Champagne Bar is a fine place for an aperitif, and Thomas Keller's Surf Club Restaurant draws diners from across the city. Bicycles and electric Mokes are on hand for exploring the neighbourhood, and families are well looked after.

Insider tip Reserve a cabana on Cabana Row for at least one day. It gives a family a shaded base on the beach with service brought to you.
Why I choose it It gives Miami a quieter, more polished beach stay, with the history of the original club and food worth the trip.
