A stone torii gate on a sandy beach, with low islands on a pale sea beyond.

Benesse House on Naoshima is a hotel and a contemporary art museum at once. It opened in 1992, designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, on a small island in the Seto Inland Sea. Its 65 rooms are spread across four buildings, Museum, Oval, Park and Beach, each with its own character. In Museum, the rooms share the building with the galleries, so the art is never far away. Oval is arranged around a still pool of water beneath an oval roof, and Park and Beach sit closer to the sea. Contemporary art runs through the whole property, inside the rooms and out across the grounds, and the wider Benesse Art Site extends the same idea to further museums on Naoshima and neighbouring islands. The rooms are Western in layout, with pale wood, large windows and simple modern furniture, and the mood is quiet. There are several restaurants and a museum café, and Setomae Sushi Nagi opened in April 2026. The island is reached by ferry from Takamatsu or Uno, which shapes the pace of a stay.

Nearest airport
Takamatsu Airport, then bus to Takamatsu Port (about 40 minutes) and ferry to Naoshima
Rooms
65 rooms in four buildings (Museum, Oval, Park and Beach)

Insider tip Plan the journey around the ferry timetables from Takamatsu or Uno, which change with the season and the museum schedules, and allow at least two nights to see the island's museums properly.

Why I choose it Sleeping inside a museum by Tadao Ando, on an island given over to art, is unlike any other stay in Japan.
