Nadesar Palace was built in 1782 and later became a residence of the Maharaja of Benares, which explains the art and furniture from his collection that still fill the rooms. It stands in its own grounds about five kilometres from the Ganges, among mango orchards, rose trellises and jasmine, with peacocks on the lawns. In a city as crowded as Varanasi, that quiet is the great luxury. There are only 14 rooms and suites, recently renovated, with claw-foot baths and antique pieces alongside modern comforts. Meals are cooked to order in Indian and international styles, served in the palace's grand rooms, by the pool or in your suite. The J Wellness Circle spa draws on old Indian healing traditions, and there is a pool, a gym, yoga, croquet and a small golf course. Guests can tour the grounds by royal horse carriage. From here, the ghats, the evening ceremonies on the river and the old lanes of the city are a short drive away, and you return to calm.

Insider tip Take the horse carriage round the grounds in the late afternoon, then head to the river for the evening ceremony on the ghats.
Why I choose it It gives guests a private retreat in Varanasi, so the intensity of the city can be enjoyed on their own terms.
