The Leela Palace sits in Chanakyapuri, the diplomatic enclave of New Delhi, among the embassies. The building takes its cue from Lutyens' Delhi, a large palace-style block with contemporary interiors, filled with paintings and hand-carved pieces by Indian artists. There are 260 rooms and suites in more than a dozen categories, from Grande Deluxe rooms to suites with balconies, suites with plunge pools and two presidential suites at the top. Rooms are big, with generous beds, well-lit bathrooms and long views over the city. Dining is one of the reasons to stay: Jamavar for Indian cooking, Megu for modern Japanese, Le Cirque for French and Italian, and The Qube for global menus through the day, with The Library Bar for cocktails and the Lobby Lounge for tea and desserts. There is an outdoor pool, a gym and the Aujasya wellness centre. The airport is around 35 minutes by car, which makes the hotel an easy first or last night in India.

Why I choose it A smooth arrival in Delhi, close to the airport, with four serious restaurants under one roof for the first jet-lagged evening.
