The Hotel Georgia opened in 1927 and became Vancouver's glamorous address, with guests from Laurence Olivier and Katharine Hepburn to Elvis and the Rolling Stones. Rosewood restored it and reopened it in 2011, keeping the dark-wood lobby and naming the 1927 Lobby Lounge after the year it all began. There are 156 rooms and suites, residential in feel, with Italian linen, large windows over downtown and bathrooms with rain showers and heated floors. At the top, the Lord Stanley Suite and the Rosewood Suite have rooftop terraces with plunge pools and outdoor fireplaces. Hawksworth is one of the city's leading restaurants, and the Georgia Bar has classic cocktails and live jazz or piano in the evening. There is also a garden terrace for brunch and drinks under the open sky. Sense, the spa, sits alongside an indoor saltwater pool and a fitness centre. Stanley Park, Granville Island and the waterfront are all a short trip away.

Insider tip Book afternoon tea in the 1927 Lobby Lounge on arrival day. No room in the hotel shows its history more clearly.
Why I choose it It is the most characterful hotel in central Vancouver, a good start or finish to a journey through Whistler and the island.
