Paradise Road Tintagel

  • Best time: December to March, for Colombo and the west coast
A red building topped by a clock in Colombo.

Paradise Road Tintagel is a 1930s colonial-era mansion at 65 Rosmead Place in Colombo 7, named after the Cornish castle linked with the birth of King Arthur. The house is a heritage building of national importance and was once home to three of Sri Lanka's political leaders. The designer Udayashanth Fernando, founder of the Paradise Road design and lifestyle brand, opened it as a hotel in 2005 and did the interiors himself. There are just 10 suites, in Superior, Executive and Royal categories, each laid out differently because of the house's past as a home, and the MICHELIN inspector describes them as plush and contemporary in rich, dark colours, with no colonial kitsch. The restaurant is inventive and modern, with alfresco tables, a private dining room and a dark, moody cocktail bar, and high tea is served every afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. A private pool sits in a walled courtyard on the ground floor. The hotel hosted the then Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, now King Charles III and Queen Camilla, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo, and it doubles as a meeting place for the city.
