Amanwella sits above a curved beach on Sri Lanka's south coast near Tangalle, between two rocky headlands and backed by a coconut grove. The resort is contemporary and low-key. Each of its 30 suites has floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on both sides, a private plunge pool and a terrace facing the sea, with a double sun lounger for doing very little. Stays include daily breakfast, afternoon tea and morning yoga, and a personal instructor can take sessions on the sand, with personal training arranged on request. The coast here suits slow days, though there is plenty within reach: revered temples, rolling tea country and several of the island's national parks, where herds of elephant roam. There are turtles to look for and water for snorkelling. The resort runs its own outings to Mulkirigala, a monastic site built on an isolated rock, and offers longer packages built around wildlife. Colombo's main airport is about two and a half hours away by road, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport about an hour, and an air taxi links the main airport with Dickwella in 50 minutes.

Insider tip Take the 50-minute air taxi from Colombo's airport to Dickwella instead of the two-and-a-half-hour drive, and the beach is close at hand.
Why I choose it The quieter of Aman's two Sri Lankan addresses, it pairs well with the south coast's national parks and with Galle.
