One&Only Le Saint Géran takes up its own peninsula at Belle Mare on the east coast of Mauritius, with the Indian Ocean on one side and a calm lagoon on the other. Almost two kilometres of beach run around it, so there is always a quiet stretch of sand, and the water is good for swimming. There are three pools, one of them at the tip of the peninsula, giving families, couples and spa guests their own places to settle. Rooms, suites and villas are classic in style, and suites come with a butler. The restaurants range widely. TAPASAKE serves Japanese and Mediterranean dishes over the water, RIVA is a beach and pool club with Italian Riviera cooking, PRIME is the grill, and Le Badamier serves Mauritian food by the sand. The Guerlain Spa looks after wellness, and the Boathouse runs snorkelling, diving, water-skiing, kayaks and fishing trips. Away from the beach, guests can paddle through mangroves, hike to waterfalls, explore a national park or take a helicopter from the resort's own helipad. There is a kids' club, and Port Louis is about 40 minutes by road.

Insider tip Spend a morning at the Boathouse: water-skiing, Hobie Cats, kayaks and snorkelling on the lagoon are all run from there, and the mangrove kayak trip is worth asking for.
Why I choose it Its peninsula gives it beach on two sides and a lagoon calm enough for young swimmers, which makes it one of our first thoughts for families in the Indian Ocean.
