A river winding through a green valley between steep forested mountains.

Amankora is a journey of five lodges across the western and central valleys of Bhutan, at Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang, designed to be travelled in sequence. Bumthang, the farthest east, is often called the spiritual heartland of the kingdom. The lodge stands in Jakar beside the Wangdicholing Palace, in a valley that holds 29 temples and monasteries, among them the ancient Jambay Lhakhang. Its 16 suites of 52 square metres follow the Amankora pattern, with wood-burning stoves, king-size beds, window seats, twin vanities and terrazzo bathtubs. The dining room has its own fireplace, and a courtyard terrace with a fire pit draws guests out on clear evenings; a private dining room seats groups of up to 32. The spa has three treatment rooms and a steam room, and yoga classes and wellness programmes run through the week. The visit most guests remember is the offering of 108 butter lamps at Jambay Lhakhang, arranged by the lodge. Reaching Bumthang means crossing high mountain passes, a long and beautiful drive that is part of the experience.
