Rocpool Reserve is a restored Georgian mansion in the centre of Inverness, above the River Ness and a few minutes on foot from the castle and the high street. It has become a hotel for residents only, so the bar and dining room are for guests alone, and the feel is closer to a private house than a city hotel. There are 11 bedrooms in four categories, and the design is contemporary and comfortable. The day has its own rhythm. Guests are greeted with a glass of Prosecco, afternoon tea is served between three and four, and early-evening tasting spoons come with cocktails and wine between half past five and half past six. The hotel also runs a series of events with artists, chefs, writers and outdoor guides. Inverness is the gateway to the Highlands, and from here Loch Ness, Culloden, the whisky country of Speyside and the great golf courses of the north are all within a short drive.

Insider tip Arrive by mid-afternoon. Tea and the evening tasting spoons are part of the stay, and they set the tone for a night in the Highland capital.
Why I choose it It is a small, personal base for the Highlands, ideal for a night or two at the start or end of a journey north.
