Miraflores Park is a glass-fronted tower on the Malecón de la Reserva in Miraflores, the stylish residential district of Lima, looking straight out over the Pacific. It opened in 1996 and stands within a 10-kilometre run of parks and boardwalks along the coast, so a morning walk begins at the door. Inside, it has the feel of a European boutique hotel. The 87 rooms and suites look over the ocean, with fine linens and bathrooms in marble and granite, and some suites add a terrace or plunge pool; the Signature Suites reach 150 square metres. Tragaluz, the main restaurant, is a Lima institution for Peruvian cooking with international influences, and breakfast is served on the 11th floor at the Observatory, high above the sea. Belo Bar pours pisco sours before dinner. A rooftop pool, a spa using organic ingredients from the Peruvian Amazon and a gym complete the house. Miraflores has good shopping, museums and nightlife close by, and the hotel makes a calm first or last night in Peru, before or after Cusco and the Andes.

Insider tip Ask for a room facing the Pacific, book the spa ahead of arrival, and pack a swimsuit for an evening swim in the rooftop pool.
Why I choose it Lima's coast at its most relaxed, with a restaurant locals rate highly and an easy rhythm that suits the start or end of a journey through Peru.
