Four Places to Spend Christmas and New Year 2026

A Mayfair Christmas, Hogmanay in Perthshire, a fortnight of festivities in the Bavarian Alps and Christmas Eve in Vienna, all with 2026 dates confirmed.

Christmas away from home works when the hotel treats the season as its own occasion rather than a surcharge on the room. The good ones publish their programme early, and they fill early too. These four have their 2026 dates out now.

Christmas in Mayfair

Claridge’s does Christmas over three nights, arriving on 23 or 24 December. Children leave mince pies and carrots on the mantelpiece, meet Father Christmas and his elf, and find a Claridge’s stocking. There are entertainers on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, carols on Christmas morning, a horse-drawn carriage ride around Mayfair with hot chocolate, and Christmas lunch in Dante Mayfair or the French Salon. From the Mayfair Suite upwards, the suite has its own tree.

Who it suits. A family who want Christmas in London, with the tree in the room and the carriage ride to remember.

Hogmanay in Perthshire

Gleneagles, sees in 2027 with what it calls the biggest festive family house party in Scotland. The New Year break runs from 30 December to 1 January. Children can join a Talent Academy with vocal coaches and choreographers, try arts and crafts, and have a disco of their own.

Who it suits. A family, or two families together, who want New Year to be the main event.

A fortnight in the Bavarian Alps

Schloss Elmau, runs a full programme from 19 December to 6 January. For children and teenagers there is skiing from 21 December to 1 January, a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, gingerbread houses, a magician and a New Year’s Eve party of their own. For everyone, there are concerts through the season, a festive dinner at IKIGAI on 25 and 26 December, and fireworks over the Wetterstein mountains at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Who it suits. A family with children of different ages, who each want something of their own to do.

Christmas Eve in Vienna

Hotel Sacher Wien builds its festive season around the table: a five-course Christmas Eve dinner with wine pairing, lunch on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve with an early, late or gala seating, and a Petit Sacher holiday menu for children aged six to 12.

Who it suits. A couple, or a family with older children, who would rather spend Christmas in a city than in the country.

Getting it right

Book now rather than in November, because some houses are already full for 2026. Check the arrival rules: Claridge’s Christmas, for one, only starts on 23 or 24 December. And read the deposit terms before you commit: Claridge’s asks for half up front, non-refundable, with the balance due by 25 November.

The practice books all four. Which one depends on who is coming, so that is where the conversation starts.
